Yep, hurricane season is amongst us. June 1st is the kick off of the stormy season. Are you and your fur baby ready for it?
I know often times, as humans, we want to prepare for the unexpected, but did you include your fur baby? Are you as prepared as you think?
We all want the same thing, and that is to keep our family safe during a hurricane, that includes our fur babies too.
Below are recommended guidelines to follow to ensure that you are prepared in the event of an emergency. That includes natural disasters and unexpected chaos.
Have a plan
Have you thought about making a crisis plan? Are you going to evacuate? If so, where? If you are not home, do you have a plan for family members or a friend to get your dog and meet you at a designated location?
Evacuate with your dog
Plan each evacuation with your dog in mind. Locate pet friendly hotels, AirB&B’s, shelter or family members.
Prepare a Pet Evacuation Kit
This is ideal! If you do not have one, create a P.E.K. asap. Your P.E.K should include the following:
Pet food (2 weeks worth)
Water (2 weeks worth)
Pet carriers, labeled with name and contact information
Medicine (Medical History)
Pet first aid kit
Emergency contact numbers
Personal pet items (such as toys, bed, blankets, treats, leash, bowls)
Be up-to-date on all vaccinations and medications.
It’s highly recommended to have your dog up-to-date on their vaccinations as you may need to check into local hotels or shelters. It is also recommend to have list of their medical history with you in the event of a crisis or your pet becomes ill.
Identification
It is recommended to have an identification card (dog tag) for each dog. Also, if you have not done so already, consider getting your dog micro-chipped as it will help locate your dog in the event they are lost. If, they are already micro-chipped, make sure that the information is update with current contact information for you.
Preparation is key.
Sincerely,
A woman and her dog
