Are you ready for the 4th of July?

June 18, 2018

It’s summer and that means the 4th of July is coming. When I think of the 4th of July, I think of cook-outs, grilling, fun in the sun, and spending time with family and friends.

For many of us, we often include our dogs in the 4th of July activities, which is all fun and games until night fall. Have you noticed that your dog will start to shake and tremble at the sound of firecrackers or the flash of lights in the sky? The loud bing, bang, and boom often scares them. Your dog has no way of expressing that they’re nervous and scared. You'll have to pay close attention to their body language to find this out.

Below are my top tricks for reducing the anxiety of the 4th of July for your dog.

  • Tire him out- I say this all the time, a tired dog is a good dog. Taking your dog on an extra long walk or increasing their activity will burn off their energy and increase their sleepiness. They wont have time to be anxiety driven.

  • Calming treats or medication – When it is getting close to “Bing, Bam, and Boom Time”, give your dog a calming treat or medication. For me, I like to give my dog a treat filled with CBD Oil. (See my blog post about the benefits of CBD oil). The calming treats help to reduce their anxiety and increase a level of calmness when in an anxious environment.

  • The use of anxiety products- There are several anxiety reducing products such as the Thundershirt and the Adaptil Dog Diffuser. I have not tried this products yet but I hear that they are great for comforting dogs by giving them the feeling of being swaddled or hugged.

  • Reducing the noise- Reducing the noise helps a lot. Try closing all the windows and playing soft music. The use of music or the use of a television will help to reduce the outside noise.

  • Lavender oil- lavender oil is proven to reduce a dog’s anxiety and increase a level of comfort. Combine the use of music and the lavender oil together to reduce your dog’s anxiety during the 4th of July. Talk about peaceful!

By using these techniques, your dog will be able to enjoy the 4th of July as much as you will.

Warm Wags and Smiles,

A woman and her dog
